For me, women’s poetry of witness, of justice, of inspiration and loving kindness has been profoundly inspiring, empowering and comforting. What follows is a collection of some of my favorites as well as some of my own poems that describe aspects of the defender experience – one about a client of mine who is now off death row in Colorado and two others about friends’ clients who were executed. I think some of not getting burned out is to find a place where our outrage and sadness over injustice can be honored and memorialized beyond the courtroom, so we are less at risk to be driven from this critical work.
